Jason Stockwood, Labour’s candidate for Greater Lincolnshire Mayor, brings a business and community-focused approach to challenge Reform UK's rise in the region.

From Grimsby roots to business leadership

Jason Stockwood's journey from a council estate in Grimsby to the boardrooms of global companies is a testament to his resilience and dedication. Raised by a single mother in the 1970s and 80s, he credits the welfare state and a supportive community for laying the foundation of his success. After studying philosophy at the University of Bolton, Stockwood ventured into the business world, holding significant roles such as managing director at Travelocity and international managing director at Match.com.

His tenure as CEO of Simply Business was marked by accolades, including being named the UK's Best Place to Work by The Sunday Times in 2015 and 2016. Despite his corporate achievements, Stockwood remained deeply connected to his hometown. In 2021, he co-led the takeover of Grimsby Town Football Club, aiming to rejuvenate the club and, by extension, the community. His commitment to local development is further evident in initiatives like the Horizon Youth Zone in Grimsby, designed to provide young people with opportunities and support.

Labour’s candidate with a community vision

In November 2024, Stockwood was selected as the Labour and Co-operative Party's candidate for the inaugural Greater Lincolnshire mayoral election. His campaign emphasizes restoring hope, empowering communities, and leading Lincolnshire towards a thriving future. Drawing from his personal experiences, he advocates for policies that resonate with everyday challenges faced by residents.

Stockwood's platform focuses on tangible improvements: enhancing public transport, addressing stagnant wages, and revitalizing public services. He believes in honest conversations about what can and can't be achieved, aiming to build bold coalitions among unions, businesses, and local groups to create a united vision for Lincolnshire.

Confronting Reform UK's growing influence

The mayoral race in Lincolnshire has garnered national attention, particularly due to the rising influence of Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage. Reform's candidate, Dame Andrea Jenkyns, a former Conservative MP, is gaining traction by addressing voter discontent with mainstream parties. Key issues propelling Reform's popularity include skepticism about immigration policies, dissatisfaction with local services, and opposition to large-scale renewable energy projects.

Stockwood positions himself as a counterforce to this trend, emphasizing the economic benefits of renewable energy investments and advocating for a future-focused approach. He aims to resonate with voters disillusioned by traditional politics by offering practical solutions rooted in his business and community experience.

Campaigning on local issues and devolution opportunities

The newly established Greater Lincolnshire Combined County Authority presents an opportunity to address longstanding regional challenges. Stockwood's campaign highlights the need for improved infrastructure, better public transport, and economic diversification beyond traditional industries like agriculture and defense. He also emphasizes the importance of building new homes, particularly on disused brownfield sites, to meet housing demands without encroaching on open countryside.

Stockwood advocates for a mayoral leadership style that listens first, engages with communities, and delivers honest, focused results. He believes that by harnessing the region's potential and fostering collaboration, Lincolnshire can navigate the challenges of devolution and emerge stronger. As the election approaches, Stockwood's blend of business acumen and deep community ties positions him as a compelling candidate aiming to bridge divides and lead Lincolnshire into a prosperous future.
